Penitential crosses

The three granite crosses standing in front of the gate leading to the churchyard date back to the Middle Ages. The original site of their placement remains unknown, as does their precise age. In all probability, they were not made in the same workshop. They are considered to be penitential, or reconciliation crosses – reminding us of a medieval law that ordered murderers to place a stone cross at the site of their crime.
