Penitential cross

Information

  • Address: ul. Kościuszki , 55-020 Węgry
Three granite crosses embedded in the wall of the cemetery at the church of St. Hedwig come from the 14th to 16th century. They are an example of penitential crosses, pointing to a medieval law, according to which a convicted killer had to hew one as a sign of repentance and reparation and place the cross at the site of the crime. One of the crosses still bears an engraved sword – the murder weapon.
