The monument, shaped as a block of stone topped with a ball, is devoted to Erasmus Ciołek Witelo, physicist, mathematician, philosopher and diplomat who lived at the turn of the 14th century. He was the son of a Polish noblewoman and a wealthy burgher of Thuringia. Educated at the universities of Paris and Padua, he was the first widely known Polish scholar of the Middle Ages. After returning to Silesia, he became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Wrocław, and received the village of Żórawina as his prebendary from Duke Henry IV.
